Extras to go with Pastor Josiah’s sermon The Breastplate of Righteousness (Suit Up, Pt 3)
Welcome to the latest sermon flight - a curated list of resources that connect in some way to the theme of the message preached at my local church. Today Pastor Josiah1 preached on the breastplate of righteousness in Ephesians 6. Here are a few extras to go along with his sermon.
Books: Dane Ortlund has a lovely book on sanctification and how, practically, we can grow in righteousness. It’s titled Deeper: Real Change for Real Sinners. There’s also a shorter, more concise version of the book titled How Does God Change Us if you’re short on time.
Quote: Pastor Josiah mentioned this quote from J. C. Ryle which provides a framework for thinking through righteousness in our own day-to-day lives. Here it is for your reference:
Do nothing that you would not like God to see. Say nothing you would not like God to hear. Write nothing you would not like God to read. Go no place where you would not like God to find you. Read no book of which you would not like God to say, "Show it to Me." Never spend your time in such a way that you would not like to have God say, "What are you doing?”
Article: Pastor Josiah wrote a lovely article on his Substack this week about the beauty and life-giving nature of repentance. | Refreshing Repentance
For the parents: One of the things I think about often is how I can best raise my children to obey God through relying on Christ. Abbey Wedgeworth’s Training Young Hearts series of children’s books have been really helpful to me as a mom, giving me a gospel-centered script I can follow in moments of disciplining my kids. I try to follow the pattern she lays out in her children’s books whenever we have moments of more serious discipline. You can also listen to this podcast episode where she talks about life in their family’s home! I found it so helpful and encouraging!

Author of today’s sermon & co-author of our three children.
I find it so bizarre that I sent you a message earlier asking for just such a book recommendation only to find you had already given one here. (that I hadn't read yet since we were out of town for that sermon and just finished watching it. ) Thank you! ♡
